Small World Play

Small world play is exactly what it sounds like, it’s when children build “small worlds” that often have rules and norms all their own. They might use animals or figurines to inhabit the space and sort through situations they’ve experienced, observed, or heard about in this mini environment. Small world play gives children the opportunity to dissect a heavy topic while maintaining some emotional distance from it. They’re also the shot callers in their play, they have decision-making power and autonomy, which can be empowering as they work through a big idea.

What to buy

Below are three materials we sourced for a recently-completed project. Our client’s son loved dinosaurs, but didn’t really have accessories to go along with his set. We bought turf patches, wood trunks, and wood slices. Click on each photo to purchase with our affiliate link!

Playsillks

We’re also really big fans of playsilks for small world play. Truth be told, we’re big playsilk fans in general (they can be used so many ways, they’re the ultimate open-ended material), but they really do shine in small world play. Use this link or use the code LITTLEKINGDOMS at checkout to get 10% off your order at Sarah’s Silks. We purchased the set below for this project, it’s their “Primary Playsilk Set.”
