Firsthand Fun Playroom (The Design Details)

We just finished up a VERY special project we’ve been itchin’ to share! Our clients had an INCREDIBLE backhouse we transformed from an office to a playroom. We are so happy with the result and can’t wait to hear how their sweet little girl enjoys the space for years to come!

Playful Patterns

The abundant natural lighting and high ceilings in the space created an airy and inviting atmosphere we had to lean into. To create a warm and playful ambiance, we loved the idea of mixing patterns. We came across this manos wallpaper a while ago and were instantly OBSESSED. We couldn’t wait to use it in a playroom, so were thrilled that the family was equally as excited about it. Next we wanted to add another big patterned element to the room to play off the handy (pun intended) wallpaper. We fell in love with this gambit checkered washable rug and loved that it brought a more neutral pop to the space (and is cozy as heck!!).

Paint the Real MVP

We lucked out that the space already had a solid set of built-ins when we arrived. We loved that there were six lower drawers, easily accessible to kiddos, and many higher shelves to store toys out of rotation (read our post about toy rotation here). We wanted to warm up the space by painting the built-ins a muted pink color and adding fresh brass pulls and brass knobs. The family loved the idea of incorporating both pink and yellow into the space, so we put a warm buttery yellow on two walls and the ceiling beam. Our last paint endeavor was beneath the north facing window. We included a low chalkboard wall so their two-year-old could add her own wall coverings to the space!

Floating Desk

We love a good play table and chairs set like the rest of them, but wanted to design a custom floating desk for this space. We positioned it beneath a window, looking out on the yard, so sunlight would flood the workspace. We chose a white oak for the wood and then had our contractor build a custom art supplies holder on the side. This made the materials super accessible to their daughter so she could help herself to items on her own. We wanted to bring a few more pops of yellow into the space, so added these Lennon chairs. With a table big enough for three, there are sure to be many art collaborations here in the future.

Seating for ALL ages!

While kids are ALWAYS the priority in our spaces, we also want adults to have an enjoyable experience. Any adult who’s supervised a child knows that comfy seating is a MUST. We loved that these modern loungers could be a cozy place for family storytime or easily pushed aside for a dance party. Moveable furniture is always a bonus in a space, especially for kids who are really into gross motor activities and need a lot of freedom to move about.

Stay tuned for next week's post where we’ll dive into all the play details of this room :)
