Firsthand Fun Playroom (The Play Details Part 1)
If you haven’t read our last post about the backhouse we recently converted from an office to a playroom, check it out here (it focuses on all the design deets)! The family wanted to incorporate as many engaging play features as possible and SPOILER ALERT, we did just that.
Lego Cave
Our clients film a lot of fun videos from their home, so wanted to add a secret window to the room. Talk about dreamy! From the office side it looks like a normal bookcase, but when rolled to the left it reveals a passage to the playroom! We wanted the hole’s disguise to be just as engaging as the tunnel itself. We decided to create a “Lego cave” by placing baseplates on the sides and top of the opening. We made sure our clients’ kiddo was stocked with a classic set of bricks (if you haven’t heard our hot take on Legos, watch our reel), and stored them in these acrylic toy dispensers above the window for easy access and clean up.
Magnet Door
In case the family didn’t feel like crawling to the room next door, we also included an adult-sized door in the space. Its playful facade? A magnet wall! Our favorite adds to a magnetic surface are letters, Magna-tiles and ramps! Blog post coming soon explaining how to DIY a magnet wall in your own home :)
Ballet Barre
Developing gross motor skills is SO important for young children, and a fun way to do so is through dance! We knew our clients’ daughter loved movin’ and groovin', so thought a ballet barre would be the perfect addition to the room. Being able to see her reflection in the mirror will help her fine tune those poses! We picked a taller mirror, so the barre can be adjusted upward should she develop a lifelong love of dance.
Dress Up Racks
As children, we were big dramatic play girls, so love fostering this category of play in the families we work with. Racks make costumes so accessible to children, so they can easily choose what they’d like to wear and help themselves to it. We like to store accessories close by (either on a shelf beneath the clothes or in a nearby drawer). We thought this rack was so cute with its simple lines and raw wood. We like using adult size wooden hangers with a bar to hang any costume attachments on.
Stay tuned for our final post covering all the play details we couldn’t get to here!
