Periwinkle Paradise Part 1: Doll Play + Storage Elements!
There’s something ~very~ fun about designing a room for all girls. We love getting to lean into a feminine, playful feel AND reminisce on some of our favorite ways to play as children (Barbie & American Girl dolls for Claire and every kind of art project for Lily)! This went from an underutilized room to the heart of this family’s home!
Before Photos
This space underwent a BIG transformation from start to finish! Originally when you walked in, there were a lot of chunky doll accessories (play kitchen, American Girl Doll vignettes, Barbie vehicles) lining the perimeter of the room. Some were very beloved and played with often, others had seen their day and become somewhat forgotten over the years. Because these kinds of accessories can be SO large and SO difficult to store, we nixed the second and third string options but made sure to keep the favs. The Barbie Dreamhouse, Barbie Jeep, and a cute American Girl Doll Shower play set are a few that made the cut!
Barbie Acrylic Shelves
Our client told us how much her girls loved Barbies, but we found that they were tucked away and tricky to access the way they were being stored. We had seen this Barbie storage idea (thanks @justatinabit for the idea!) and were desperate to try it out. So, we mounted some acrylic magazine shelves, dressed up the Barbies, and tucked them in! They’re more visible now and double as some very sweet decor.
American Girl/Barbie Set Design & Doll Cabinet
When we donated a good chunk of the play sets, we knew we’d need to replenish in a thoughtful way. So! We decided to engage the girls in the set design process. Who says children can’t make their own play sets? Stay tuned for a blog post about all of the materials we used and all of the reasons why this kind of play is beneficial!
After introducing the “Set Design” project, we figured the best place to store dolls, their accessories, and set design materials was right in between the atelier and the Barbies. This cabinet’s depth also made it the perfect surface to host their mini sets! We mounted a picture light above it and named it our “doll cabinet.”
Yellow Steel Storage + Luggage Tag Labels
Is it dramatic to say we fell in love with this shelving unit by the end of the project? Maybe, buuuuut it’s also true. Hear us out: It’s sturdy, low profile, has such clean lines, can hold three bins on each shelf, pairs well with a high ceiling, AND comes in a ton of different colors! Obsessed.
We used these really durable luggage tags and made labels on Canva then slid them right in. The rubber-y loops that come with them are tough but stretchy, great for a playroom.
