Periwinkle Paradise Part 2: Atelier
Design a playroom with an atelier? Sure, make my day! We LOVE building out a workshop space for our client families. There are some staples we make sure end up in each project, and there are usually some curveballs specific to the unique kiddos that will use the playroom. Keep reading to learn what ended up in this Periwinkle Paradise atelier!
Before Photos
This built-in desk is what was being used for art projects before we made some changes. Lean in, because there are some features here that should have made this the ~perfect~ atelier, but a few important design choices meant that this space was actually hindering creative play.
Built-ins: We adore built-in shelving and desks, but with this setup, the portions that should have been used for seating became storage because of the large doll items in the space. The outcropping was also rather small and awkwardly placed. It made it hard for all three girls to sit down and create together.
Cork board wall: We’ve actually done this before! Buuuut in this instance, it seemed like the depth of the desk was preventing the young girls from being able to reach the cork and pin anything up.
Vertical storage: We are all for making the most of walls, especially in a playroom, but the open shelving here lacked a cleanness and cut into the room in a way that made the space feel smaller than it was.
But no worries, all is well :) We gave this atelier a makeover and it was being used within an hour of the reveal!
Color Drenched Pegboard
First priority? Finding a way to make the art materials accessible so that they’d actually be used. We love a pegboard, and thought it would be cute to camouflage it against the wall with a little color drenched moment. This storage strategy means that everything is visible rather than tucked away. The bins and buckets are easy to pull down and put back when cleanup rolls around.
Work Table + Mix ‘n’ Match Chairs
We decided that these girls were old enough for adult-sized furnishing they could grow into, so we found a large work table for their atelier! We ordered an acrylic table topper to protect the surface so that they’d be able to use it until they leave for college (not pictured). For seating we decided a mix and match situation would be ADORABLE and, uh, we were right. These Serena and Lily dining chairs showed up in the space exactly like we envisioned. Playful, girly, eclectic.
Frames + Clipboards Kids’ Art Display
We knew we’d need to find a way to display all the art they’d create in their new atelier, so we opted for some cute little multi-colored frames and clipboards. We find that an interchangeable option is always best with kids, because they are creative machines. You don’t have to exclusively do impermanent hangings (we’re big believers in custom framing as well), but one area is nice! Stay tuned for an upcoming blog post about the DIY process for the frames.
