Jean Michel Basquiat Crowns

Artist Inspiration: Jean Michel Basquiat

Basquiat was born December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother. We got to talk about his friendship with our artist from last week, Keith Haring, which was fun! Inspired by the iconic crown featured in many of Basquiat's paintings, we made our own this week! Our mediums? Cardboard, oil pastels, markers and tape!

We had so much fun with this prompt. We brought in precut crowns and had the kiddos get busy decorating them. Some used the tape first, creating lines and shapes that they’d color in. Others made colorful, opaque marks with the oil pastels over their entire crown. Check out the final products and some cute little portraits below :)
