Monsters
Monsters are an endlessly fascinating concept to children. We wanted to take the power away from these mysterious creatures by becoming their creator. Things become a lot less scary when we get comfortable with them :)
For the base of the monster, each child received half an egg carton. The little bumps were a perfect canvas for some creepy creations. We also offered tape, scrap paper, scissors, googly eyes, and crayons. We loved watching these supernatural beings come to life! They went on to incorporate their monsters into other kinds of play- they built a “space station” for them and we had a little dance party to “Who Let The Dogs Out?” with our monsters!
When we give kids unconventional materials - things other than paper and markers - they have to use a different kind of creativity. They exercise strategic planning, problem solving, fine motor skills, and maybe most importantly, they learn to persist through frustration and failure. That’s a big deal! And it’s so healthy for children to experience this. We’d strongly encourage you to keep saving recyclables and offering them to your children at home :)
